NEW DELHI: India on Monday responded to US President Donald Trump's threat to "substantially" hike tariffs on Indian imports for its continued Russian oil imports by calling the targeting of India "unjustified and unreasonable.
In a strongly worded statement, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) has come to India's defense on energy policy, explaining that its crude oil acquisitions from Russia are "a necessity forced by international market conditions" rather than a political sanction of Moscow.
"India will do everything that is required to protect its national interests and economic security," the MEA stated in a release, going on to note that the US and European Union have themselves maintained trade with Russia, including energy and strategic commodities, even though they vociferously opposed the war in Ukraine.".
