Starmer: ‘Sooner or later’ Russia must yield to peace

Britain's top leader called today for his global peers to insist more on landing a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, this time around which fighting has been going on between these two countries this morning.

During a virtual meeting with mainly European leaders, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Russia would eventually have to engage in discussions to achieve a ceasefire in the three-year-long conflict.

He spoke to the group, referred to as a 'coalition of the willing,' which consisted primarily of European leaders, along with representatives from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, but notably excluded the United States

Sooner or later, Putin will have to sit down at the table," Starmer says of Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader who invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Earlier, President Donald Trump suggested to Moscow that it accept a ceasefire deal negotiated between U.S. and Ukrainian delegations at a meeting in Saudi Arabia. And Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that the ball is in Russia's court now.

Putin gets that a truce makes sense on paper, in theory, but he says there are some important things that need to be sorted out first and he still has some questions that need to be ironed out when it comes to any agreement being signed.

In his nightly video address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has just grumbled that Putin is just dragging his feet and has set up so many conditions now that there is absolutely no way to make anything happen right now.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is stepping up sanctions on Russian oil and gas as well as financial markets too.

Talking this Saturday among world leaders might discuss which they will still give financially and militarily for Ukraine and Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, if they can make a deal to move forward and end the fighting. Zelenskyy attended Saturday’s online video session.
