Helen Mirren Weighs In: "James Bond Should Stay a Man"

Dame Helen Mirren has shared her opinion that James Bond should remain a male character, despite considering herself a strong feminist. In a recent chat with Saga Magazine, the Oscar-winning actress said, “James Bond has to be James Bond – if it’s not, it turns into something entirely different.”

The next Bond movie, the 26th in the series, will be developed by Amazon MGM Studios, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the script. While the studio has said it wants to bring a “fresh” approach, it also aims to respect the long-standing legacy of the famous spy.

Helen Mirren, now 80, is starring alongside former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan in the upcoming film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, where she plays a retired spy. Brosnan, who played Bond in four films from 1995’s GoldenEye to 2002’s Die Another Day, also voiced his belief that 007 should continue to be portrayed by a man. He added that he’s looking forward to a new, energized take on the role.

Though Mirren has acknowledged in the past that the Bond character was created during a time of deep-rooted sexism, she also pointed out the significant roles women have played in intelligence services throughout history.

They’re not alone in this view—Halle Berry, who appeared in Die Another Day, also said at this year’s Cannes Film Festival that while it’s tempting in 2025 to say Bond should be a woman, she’s unsure if it’s the right move.

Earlier this year, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson handed over creative control of the franchise to Amazon in a deal reportedly worth $1 billion. Since then, speculation has grown about who will step into the iconic role next, with actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James Norton rumored to be in the running.

As of now, no release date has been confirmed for the next James Bond film.
